Windows 10 End-of-Life: What You Need to Know

Share this:

We are only six months away from Windows 10 end-of-life (EOL), which means it’s time for your business to start preparing. Microsoft will be pulling its support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. After that date, you won’t see any more of Microsoft’s software updates or security fixes. You also will not be able to talk with support for fixes.

If you don’t switch to Windows 11, your business may experience any number of issues. By planning and implementing solutions with your MSP now, your organization will be well-settled into Windows 11 by the deadline.

How Windows 10 End-of-Life Impacts Your Business

As of October 14, 2025, any device that runs on Windows 10 will no longer receive any updates, including security updates. This means your business or others using the operating system can experience major cybersecurity issues. Vulnerabilities in the operating system will likely still exist and won’t be fixed. This gives cybercriminals time to find and exploit them to gain access to your company’s sensitive data.

There will likely be an increase in cyber threats like ransomware, data breaches, malware and more. If you don’t make the switch to Windows 11 or pay for protection, then you could even face losing your compliance status.

Your Options

You have a few options to choose from for your Windows 10 end-of-life plan. The first option is upgrading to Windows 11 if your hardware is compatible. According to experts, there are about 240 million compatible devices with software that hasn’t been updated. Some software updates could be free depending on the original license purchased, but if you need to purchase a new license, the cost would be in the $150-$200 range depending on what is needed.

If your devices are incompatible with Windows 11, you’ll need to purchase new ones. If this is the option you plan to take, we recommend starting to purchase new devices as soon as you can.

If upgrading to Windows 11 isn’t a feasible option for you, then you can opt for Microsoft’s extended security updates (ESU) for Windows 10 once Microsoft releases these licenses. With this program, your device will receive security updates to patch any vulnerabilities for the length of your purchase.

Choosing extended updates is a great option for organizations that either need more time or rely on applications and software that only work on Windows 10. However, if that application or software isn’t planning to release a new version, take the time to find a compatible software. And, if that software or application isn’t used by everyone in your organization, consider upgrading the other workstations and purchasing extended support only for those who truly need it.

Benefits of Upgrading to Windows 11

There are many benefits to upgrading to a Windows 11 device, including:

  • Enhanced security: Windows 11 offers more security features that are not available in Windows 10. This added security will increase your company’s protection against current threats.
  • Improved performance: A newer operating system will have better performance, including faster boot times and increased efficiency.
  • New features and updates: Windows 11 has a more consistent interface and has Copilot, Microsoft’s generative AI, built right in. Plus, the Windows apps are updated to enhance productivity.
  • Future-proofing: By making the upgrade, you’ll ensure your organization stays current with the latest technology trends. Extended support can be costly, and will only last a few short years.

Why You Need to Start Planning Now

Installing a new operating system or buying new workstations for your entire organization might not seem like it takes a long time or needs much thought. However, it’s not as straightforward as it might seem. Your internal IT team or outsourced IT professionals need time to install security applications, migrate your data, train your team and work out the kinks in compatibility with applications.

According to Forbes, there are 800 million users that have not gone through with an upgrade yet. If you take into consideration the 240 million compatible devices that need upgrading, there are about 560 million plus devices that will need to be replaced or covered by ESUs. Getting ahead of the crowd means you may be able to get devices.
